A 14-gauge wire would be protected by an 18-gauge fusible link. A 6-gauge wire would be protected by a 10-gauge link, and so on. Odd number wire gauge sizes like 19, 15, 13 and 11 are counted when sizing a link. The length of a fusible link should not exceed 9". Can a fusible link be used to replace a fuse that blows frequently?. It's because if you have an issue that is serious enough to burn up a fusible link it's serious. You reset a circuit breaker and you could end up with a fire at the source of the short/overload. Check fusible links coming off of the starter, with the battery disconnected. Pull on the various colored wires that have a barrel of foam on them about 1/2" to 2/3" long that indicated that the wire is a fusible link. If a fusible link stretches, the inside of it is blown. Many circuits can be controlled by the fusible links. -

Needless to say the fusible link that is located in the Positive battery cable that goes to. These products meet or exceed S.A.E. J-156 sepcifications. A Fusible Link is NOT intended to be used in place of a fuse - only where a standard fuse cannot be used. When placing a fusible link, use a wire guage 4 gauges smaller than the existing wiring circuit. If it is a 14 gauge system, use 18 gauge fusible link wire.

Gonna put in an 8gauge wire from the alt to the battery and a 140 Amp fuse there. (Which is the max output for my alternator) Advice, dump the fusible links. 14 ga fusible links burn at about 45-50 Amps. 16ga 30-40A.

The fusible link that protects the wire should then be two gauge sizes (or four numbers larger). For example, use 10 gauge wire to handle the amperage, and a 14 gauge fusible link to.

Trader wrote: The rule of thumb is the fusable link is 4 gauge wire size smaller then the original conductor and the length is 6" to 12". Longer length for more amps and #8 link being 8" for automotive. The conductor should burn out before the insulation and being a fixed length, burn out in the center. Perfect!. To find the total amperage in your specific installation, refer to the table below. Find the items that you’re installing and their current requirements. Add the values and divide by 1000 to get your total current in Amps. You can use this value in the fuse size chart above to determine the minimum wire size required.
